Understanding the NC Opportunity Grant and ESA+ Program: What Families Need to Know

Sep 15, 2025 · 4 min read

For many North Carolina families, the NC Opportunity Grant and Education Student Accounts Plus (ESA+) programs—administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA)—offer critical financial support to ensure students receive the education that best meets their needs. These programs help cover tuition, educational services, and support for students attending private or nontraditional schools.

But for parents of students with learning differences, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, or other unique educational needs, navigating the renewal process—especially the Documentation of Continuing Eligibility for ESA+—can be confusing and stressful. That's where our practice can help.

What Is the NC Opportunity Grant (and ESA+)?

The Opportunity Scholarship helps eligible families afford private school tuition. Meanwhile, ESA+ (Education Student Accounts Plus) goes a step further, providing additional funding to support students with disabilities. This may include costs for therapies, tutoring, and specialized educational materials.

Every three years, families renewing ESA+ support must submit updated documentation confirming that their child continues to qualify based on educational need and diagnostic criteria. This documentation requires a Psychologist with a school psychology focus or a Psychiatrist to review the student's current functioning and to sign the required NCSEAA verification form.

How Our Practice Supports ESA+ Renewing Families

With our extensive background in school psychology, our practice specializes in conducting a baseline assessment that meets NCSEAA's eligibility and renewal documentation requirements. We don't just provide a report — we provide a roadmap.

Our evaluations include:

  • Updated diagnostic assessments that reflect the student's current strengths and challenges
  • Formal documentation that satisfies the "Documentation of Continuing Eligibility" requirement for ESA+ renewal
  • Review meeting with families to ensure information is clearly communicated and understood
  • Why Choose a Specialist in School Psychology

We have hands-on experience within school systems — and that difference matters. Our experience allows us to:

  • Interpret IEPs, 504 plans, and prior educational evaluations accurately
  • Communicate in the same language used by schools and state agencies
  • Provide detailed, actionable recommendations that help both in school planning and in supporting ESA+ renewals
